Hoodlums disguised as #EndSARS protesters around Kings Square in Benin City, Edo, stormed the headquarters of the Nigeria Correctional Centre in the state (Nigeria prisons in Benin), causing the release of several prisoners.
The hoodlums who gathered at the walls of the prison, appeared to be breaking through the fence and inmates could be seen escaping from the prison compound into the Benin Sapele road.
Special Adviser to Governor Godwin Obaseki on Media, Crusoe Osagie, told Channels Television that the hoodlums exchanged fire with security operatives at the Maximum prison in Benin City.
“The hoodlums are currently exchanging fire with the security personnel at the Maximum security prison in Oko, Benin City,” Osagie told Channels Television.
In videos which are circulating online, freed prisoners can be seen trooping to the streets in excitement.
